Pengertian Cause and Effect
Cause: Why something happens (situation/reason)
Effect: What happens
The cause is the thing (situation/reason) that causes something to happen, while the effect is the result of the cause.
When an event causes another event, both events have a cause and effect (causal) relationship. E.g:
- Cause: I missed the alarm
- Effect: I woke up late
Complex sentences might consist of two clauses that have a cause and effect relationship. E.g.
- Because of the flood, my family had to find another place to live.
- I was absent yesterday, so I did not know the homework.
Conjunctions
To relate two clauses with a causal relationship, we need conjunctions.
Examples:
- Because houses are very expensive in New York, most people rent a studio.
- Prices are rising due to the national holiday.
- Since he didn’t wear a helmet, he has to pay the fine.
- There was no bus passing by, so he had to walk to the nearest village.
Sentence Connectors
To connect two sentences that have a causal relationship, we need sentence connectors. Such as consequently, as a consequence, for this reason, therefore, as a result.
Examples:
● The weather was very bad. Consequently, no one was allowed to swim on the beach.
● Some countries are badly affected by COVID-19. As a result, they need to close the schools.
● Riani overslept. Therefore, she was late for work
● Students graduating from overseas universities get better jobs. For this reason, many students want to study overseas.
